Across the country; close to our hearts.

“As Calgarians, we are all concerned about the emergency engulfing our community. As Jewish Calgarians, we are all looking for ways to help – it is our tradition to roll up our sleeves and share our resources whenever there is a crisis anywhere in the world,” said President Bruce Libin and executive director Drew Staffenberg in a joint statement from the Calgary Jewish Federation.

L’inondation a dévasté l’Alberta et forcé le déplacement de 100 000 personnes.

In Calgary, 26 neighbourhoods in the vicinity of the Bow and Elbow rivers were placed under a mandatory evacuation order on June 20 and 21 as the rivers spilled over their banks and flooded communities. As water levels rose and numerous communities were placed under evacuation orders, four people were confirmed dead and over 100,000 people were displaced throughout the region.

People living in the evacuation areas returned home to massive damage to their houses and personal property, as well as structural damage, and required temporary housing and support. While none of Alberta’s Jewish service agencies or communal buildings were directly affected by the worst flooding in the province’s history, many members of the Jewish community suffered major losses to their homes and businesses.

Funds raised by FCJA’s Southern Alberta Flood Relief Fund – nearly $8,000 dollars— went to those victims requiring immediate assistance such as temporary housing, as well as for food, drinking water, blankets, hygiene kits, cleanup efforts, and more. 100% of donations were distributed to those in need, in cooperation with the Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA and Calgary’s Jewish Federation.
