Canada – Our collective responsibility

“Thanks to Hillel Canada’s efforts at Brock, creating connections with other Jewish students has become much easier. The weekly “Brews and Jews”, the annual Holocaust education night and the large holiday events bring students together from many different backgrounds and degree programs. I have become friends with people I would not have met otherwise and I feel a strong sense of Jewish community on campus even though there aren’t very many of us! Thanks to Hillel, I am proud to be a Jewish student at Brock.”

- Avital Sternin, Brock University

Federation CJA, through our national contribution to Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA, helps ensure that communal interests are defended at the national, provincial and local levels, and promotes greater understanding and tolerance. This includes supporting Jewish students from across Canada, including from Montreal, who are at universities in smaller communities through Hillel Canada and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA).

In this capacity, CIJA provides expertise, resources and issue management support to Jewish and pro-Israel student groups across the country, while building alliances with non-Jewish students on campuses both large and small. For example, Queen’s University’s Israel on Campus (IOC) group recently hosted a campus leaders’ Israeli Wine & Cheese event that attracted student leaders from across a wide spectrum of leading campus groups. Events like these are designed to strengthen strategic relationships on campus, setting the stage for future collaboration, as well as encouraging mutual understanding and respect.
