“The Jewish community of Montreal– your engagement, your care, your participation, your readiness to respond. You have, my dear friends, played a real role in the development of Israel. Jerusalem says thank you.”

- Israeli President Shimon Peres on a recent visit to Montreal

As President Peres explains, Jewish communities around the world, and specifically ours in Montreal, have helped develop Israel during those early years. In the beginning, we supported Israel financially and helped to build its infrastructure. It was really a relationship of donor to recipient. But such is not the case anymore.

We, as a community that deeply cares for Israel, have redefined how we invest in Israel. Today, our relationship is based on mutually-beneficial connections, promoting partnerships between Montreal and Israeli society on communal, organizational and personal levels. Our activities are designed to advance strategic goals for both Israel and our Jewish community.

Today, we continue to build upon the successes of existing relationships and programs. We are working together with our Israeli counterparts to create the next generation of community leaders. We are enhancing our common Jewish identity by connecting the citizens of Israel with members of our Jewish community, in particular, our strengthening bond with the people of Beer Sheva and B’nei Shimon.

In essence, the reciprocal contact and identification between Montreal and Israeli Jews is an integral part of our Jewish identity and continued survival as a people. We continue to be part of a global Jewish partnership with Israel at its heart.
