This Rosh Hashana…
greetings from new Federation CJA president David J. Cape

President, Federation CJA

As the High Holiday season approaches rapidly, I have been thinking a lot lately about our Jewish community and the strong value system that comes with being part of this community.

At Federation CJA, we use the Jewish proverb All Jews are responsible for one another to guide us in our mission. We understand that our strength as a community is a function of how we express our responsibility for one another. It is an idea that has connected Jews throughout our history and the core value that holds the promise for our future. The most effective instrument through which we express this commitment to one another is the Combined Jewish Appeal.

And Rosh Hashanah provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the connection of our Jewish values of tzedakah and tikun olam with the work of Combined Jewish Appeal.

Through the generosity of our community, Federation CJA is able to help thousands of Jews in need. Donations to Combined Jewish Appeal help pay for food and other essential necessities. Together, we get people back on their feet through employment counseling and crisis intervention. We do so much every single day and make such a positive impact in the lives of so many. And there is still so much more to do. But we couldn’t do any of it without you.

This is the time when we contemplate our hopes and dreams for the coming year. We consider what we have accomplished to this point and what more we can do to make the world a better place going forward.

The opportunities are endless. It is within our power to effect change and to help others. Each and every one of us has the power to be a leader. Each and every one of us can make a difference in the lives of those in need. Each and every one of us can ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish future for our community.

And this Rosh Hashanah, I would like to invite you to perform one more act of kindness. I encourage you to perform the mitzvah of tzedakah. As you prepare to observe the High Holidays, please open your heart by sending a generous gift to Combined Jewish Appeal 2011.

On behalf of the grateful men, women and children that you will help with your compassion and generosity, I thank you.

I wish you and yours a happy Rosh Hashanah.

We welcome your feedback and invite your comments.
