A chance for inspiration and enlightenment at General Assembly and International Lion of Judah Conference in New Orleans

American Vice President Joseph Biden

The premier gathering of Jewish volunteer leaders and professionals on the continent, the General Assembly (GA) of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), convenes from November 7 to 9 in New Orleans. The GA features wonderful international speakers who will motivate and engage, while tackling the most critical issues of the day. This year, it coincides with the International Lion of Judah (LOJ) Conference on November 8 to 10.

Among the speakers scheduled to appear are U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Israeli Leader of the Opposition Tzipi Livini, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren and Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N. Gabriela Shalev, David Simon of HBO’s The Wire, and for the LOJ Conferenec, National Jewish Book Award winner Rebecca Goldstein.

“The GA and LOJ Conference are very important opportunities for education and inspiration,” said David Cape, First Vice President of Federation CJA, who will be attending. “I would encourage anyone who can to make the trip for a really unforgettable experience.”

When Hurricane Katrina struck five years ago, the Jewish Federation movement, including Federation CJA, sprang into action and raised nearly $30 million for emergency aid, shelter, food and counselling for disaster victims. This year, GA participants will have a unique opportunity to make a hands-on contribution to the city’s on-going recovery. During a mitzvah day, they will be able to choose between helping to finish homes, maintaining parkland, and packing school supplies for students. Some will get to meet with local residents and tour the Lower Ninth Ward.

A highlight for Montrealers attending the LOJ conference will come when Alice Raby is honoured with the Kipnis-Wilson Friedland Award, which recognizes extraordinary women for a lifetime’s commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism in the Jewish world. Alice is a past President of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, former Chair of Women’s Campaign of the Combined Jewish Appeal, Co-Chair of the National Women’s Division of United Israel Appeal Federations Canada, and board member of the Bronfman Israel Experience Centre, among other leadership roles she has filled.

The Federation is encouraging community members to attend this rewarding and enlightening conference. Ten students between the ages of 18 and 24 from the FedNext division, who have been identified for their leadership potential, will be attending on scholarships, along with five each from Hillel Montréal and the Bronfman Israel Experience Centre.

The GA and Lion of Judah conferences in New Orleans promise to be very special. Anyone wishing further information is invited to visit www.jewishfederations.org/ga or contract Allison Cobrin at 514 345-2645, ext. 3091, or allison.cobrin@federationcja.org.
