Montreal & Israel

Our Montreal Jewish community has been exceptional in supporting Israel in good times and bad. Our research shows that fully three out of every four Montreal Jews have visited Israel, that 16 per cent said visiting Israel had “the most impact on their life as a Jew,” and that this figure rose to 28 per cent among those between 18 and 24 years of age. In addition, eighty-two per cent of survey respondents agreed that Israel needs our financial support.

It is clear that Federation CJA’s relationship with Israel reflects the deeply held commitment of our community. We act on the principle of our collective responsibility for one another, and our activities in Israel reflect our desire to care for those who are vulnerable and in need, to ensure Jewish vibrancy and a Jewish future, and to represent and defend our communal interests. We are working hard to ensure that we support projects that make a real difference in Israeli lives.

Inside this issue of Tikun Olam, you will see that our desire to care for those who are vulnerable is accomplished through social welfare programming which supports and strengthens the recipients. Our Jewish future and vibrancy is being advanced by activities and missions by our youth to Israel that encourage enthusiasm, education and a commitment to Jewish culture and values.

As a community, we have been investing in the future of Israel, and through it all, the most important common thread has been connecting person to person and people to people. It is important that Israeli friends know that they are part of a bigger Jewish world and that the Jewish world cares deeply about Israel and its people. At the same time, once we meet and get to know Israelis, we better understand how important Israel is to our own Jewish identity.

“Over the past years, I have had the opportunity to meet Israelis, to work with them, and to build friendships. This makes me feel much closer to what is happening there. These personal relationships make real the idea that we are all one family. We need to strengthen our communities both here and in Israel, because it is together  that the future of the Jewish people will be ensured.”
David Cape, First Vice-President, Federation CJA
